In a nod to the current polarisation of ideas and disintegration of many hitherto long-held values we are experiencing as a society, The Violet Hour has invited 4 artists working across a range of media to examine notions and concepts raised by Shelley in Ozymandias: notably decay, fragmentation, reconfiguration and reinterpretation.
Clare Dudeney has made a series of paintings on carved wood principallyfor the exhibition, deliberately scarring and scraping away the surface to create new surfaces to apply the paint to. In the act of disfiguring the wooden surface she has created new facets to build on. Taking her titles from Shelley’s words each piece conveys a different pace and character. Her broken, painted and reassembled chine-colle paper paintings display an emphasis on the juxtaposition of colour, form and surface texture.

Katie Goodwin intends her moving image pieces to be snapshots of memory of things lost: a kind of ‘memento mori’. This is strikingly apparent in her exhibition piece The Morrow. The film comprises clips, including that of the erosion of a part of the Yorkshire Coast that has been gradually falling into the sea for decades. The fastest eroding coastline in Europe, the roads collapse like a scene from an apocalypse movie, interspersed with reminders of our wartime history and references that things aren’t as secure as they are assumed to be.

For more than a year, Wonje Kang has been making a series of running paintings, one immediately following on from its predecessor, relentless and compulsive. Here his repetitive writing, and diurnal mark making have made for a constantly rhythmically, riven surface. Tropes for unremitting “boundless” perpetuity but also the embodiment of the beauty and comfort to be found in meter and rhyme.

Alice Wilson constructs her wall pieces from painted wood and plaster, employing collage, photography and printmaking techniques. She builds with coloured wood as a painter would build up colour, to create variations in texture and tone. Through the very nature of her artistic practice, these raw elements are juxtaposed, transforming into a new ‘whole’.
